Wednesday, November 1, 2023, 7:00 Pacific, SongNet Presents Barry Rudolph
Best known for his work with Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hall & Oates, and Waylon Jennings, and Enrique Iglesias and a contributing editor for Music Connection Magazine and Mix Magazines, Barry Rudolph is credited on more than 30 RIAA-certified gold and platinum records.
Playing drums in a rock band during high school and his interest in electronics led him to design and build a PA system for their use and later developed an interest in recording engineering: “I was interested in what made certain records sound better to me and why”.
His electronics interest led to working full-time nights for various aerospace companies throughout his college years. But that ended suddenly when his supervisor fired him explaining to the incredulous unemployment arbitrator: “I didn’t think he like his job”.
Now on his own, Rudolph wandered into nearby United Audio recording studio around 1969 and it changed his life. He quickly learned what worked and what didn’t when you altered the sound with an equalizer and a compressor. It was a place where you could learn by experiment, watch a seasoned pro work, make a few mistakes, and not cause many problems.
Later, after hearing about a studio changing hands in West Hollywood, he started working at the original Larrabee studios in 1970. It was back to basics first as a gopher/helper and then as operator of the mono disc cutter lathe (back then song demos were cut on 10-inch acetate discs) and then as a second engineer/helper on huge sessions with full orchestras.
After assisting on many hit records in the early ’70s cutting a few thousand discs, Barry fell in love with the whole studio life and process, After recording and mixing his first #1 record, Al Wilson’s album “Show and Tell” in 1972, he became a freelance engineer and was invited to join NARAS and is still a lifetime Grammy™ Award voting member.
Rudolph started writing for Music Connection Magazine in 1987 and for Mix Magazine in 1997 and has been a regular contributor and product reviewer to both journals ever since. He started teaching audio engineering in 2010 first at Pinnacle College and then Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California.
Barry Rudolph is founder/owner of mixing facility Tones 4 $ Studios (pronounced “Tones For Dollars”). His constantly updated Web site has over 6,000 pages of reviews, technical information, advice, useful charts and recall sheets of equipment front panels, plus Barry’s interesting stories of some of the artists and producers with whom Barry has worked with.

Wednesday, August 2nd, 7pm PDT SongNet Presents Ron McMaster (virtual event)
So amazing, they named a whole recording process after this guy! (not really but should be)
Ron McMaster (yes that really is his name) has listened to more music than anyone, and even more than that, has had a hand in helping that music become HIT RECORDS!
The mastering process is something that a lot of artists miss, especially in the current hit-and-run fleeting state of the music industry. Yet, it often is the difference between getting heard and being LISTENED to. A favorite of producers like Don Was and T Bone Burnett, he has cut LPs for the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Radiohead and virtually the entire vintage Blue Note catalog, while continuing to work on jazz reissues. He’s mastered or remastered vinyl versions of the Beach Boys (“Pet Sounds”), Radiohead (“Kid A”), Frank Sinatra (“Only the Lonely”) “Meet Glen Campbell,” the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Freaky Styley,” Wayne Shorter’s “Speak No Evil,” and George Harrison (the “Dark Horse” boxed set) as well as T Bone Burnett’s “Hunger Games” soundtrack, Robert Plant/Allison Krauss collaboration and much more. But not everything was Blue Note-level stuff. “I can remember working with Angelyne [on her EP], and that was just crazy,” he laughs.
Though recently retired, after FIVE DECADES in this business, he still loves music and knows what works, and will be sharing some of that wisdom FREE!
This is an opportunity to ask questions with one of the most legendary figures in music that you never knew was behind music you love & respect, and have him listen to YOUR work!
Email songnetshowcase@gmail.com for the link and to submit mp3 and lyric files. Please do NOT send links, as often they do not work for these events. Thanks!

Wednesday, April 5, 2023, 7:00 pm PST SongNet Presents a Virtual Literature and Lyrics Workshop with Scott Memmer!
Literature and Lyrics Workshoop (via Zoom)
In this engaging workshop English Professor Scott Memmer walks us through the great works of literature and shows us how the writing techniques used by our finest writers – Shakespeare, Chekhov, Dickinson, Tennessee Williams, James Joyce – mirrors the writing techniques of our greatest songwriters.
During this interactive workshop we will pull apart then put back together some of the finest songs ever written. What makes them great? What techniques do these world-class writers use to craft their songs? And most importantly, how do these songwriters create works of art that move the listener?
This is not some boring, arid, freeze-dried “lecture” requiring a snooze button and electroshock to stay awake. No. Nor is it a songwriting critique session designed to tear apart – and down – your songs. No. This is a workshop alive with the celebration of great songwriting, songs that have stood the test of time, songs that accomplish that most important of tasks – to elicit an emotional response in your listener.
With practice and study, you CAN learn these techniques.
Activities:
● Timed writing exercises (stop listening to that inner voice that says your songs suck).
● Group work focused on taking apart and analyzing songs.
● Avoiding modifiers. Using nouns and verbs to add power to your lyrics.
● What is an action verb? Why use the active voice instead of the passive?
● Getting rid of adverbs and adjectives and other enemies of your song.
● Less is more: How to cut and edit your songs for increased emotional impact.
● The importance of studying great literature to improve your lyrics.
Questions about this workshop? Feel free to email me ahead of time at scottmemmer@yahoo.com.
Email showcase@songnet.info or songnetshowcase@gmail.com to reserve your spot and get the Zoom link!
ABOUT SCOTT MEMMER
Scott Memmer’s first love affair with the sound of words and the human voice began in the 1950’s, around the dining table of his grandmother’s kitchen, in Valley City, Ohio. His grandmother, Hazel Cadnum, was born in 1896, and was a yarn-spinner of the first degree. Raise in a rural community before the widespread use of electricity, telephones, indoor plumbing or natural gas – before radio and television – what did Hazel and her family and friends do all day? They talked. And talked, and talked. As Memmer notes, “Mark Twain died in 1910, so my grandmother’s life dates crossed paths with Samuel Clemens. They came from the same midwestern storytelling tradition.”
Scott was born and raised in Cleveland, OH, then moved with his family to Los Angeles when he was 16. Like so many of that generation, he was immediately drawn to the country-folk music coming out of Laurel Canyon and the Hollywood Hills. Thus began Scott’s second love affair: song lyrics. Yet it would be more than forty years, not until 2014, before Scott attempted to write his first few songs. “These songs must have been stored in some dusty corner of my mind,” Memmer says. “Some cryogenic ancient deep freeze. I have no idea where they come from.” But then the songs flooded out, more than thirty in two years.
Beginning in 1971, Scott worked so many odd jobs that he lost count – short-order cook, bartender, limousine driver, retail sales, wholesale sales, automotive journalist, political reporter, newspaper delivery, substitute teacher, assistant lecture, drama coach, technical writer, marketing writer, and ten or twenty others – fired from many, retained by few, great preparation for the lowly craft of a songwriter. Along the way he became a national award-winning playwright, earned an BA In English at CSUN and a Masters in creative writing from USC; and for the last 18 years has worked as a fully tenured English professor at Antelope Valley College, in Lancaster, CA.
But none of this matters. None of this compares his third love affair – his wife, Rhonda. This September they will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Of being married to an English teacher and a songwriter, Rhonda says, “I like the roller coaster.” His two daughters filled the cup: and his grandson, Max – who stole his heart and will not give it back – brimmed it over.
For more than thirty years Scott Memmer has been obsessed with parallels between great songwriting and great literature. Join us as we take a deep dive into the finest songs ever written.
